The pillar of the maquis
A dioecious shrub of the Mediterranean maquis: only female plants carry the red clusters that ripen to black, and only if a male grows nearby.
Its resin, mastic, has been tapped since antiquity, above all on the island of Chios, for chewing, varnishes and cooking.
