From the rocky country of central Mexico, it forms clumps of cylindrical stems that spread slowly and eventually spill over the pot.
Unlike ribbed cacti, its surface is made of small conical tubercles set in spirals: each tip carries a rosette of spines, and the flowers arise between them, never on top.
