The largest herb on earth
Domesticated in Southeast Asia millennia ago, the banana has no woody trunk: what looks like one is only a tight stack of leaf sheaths.
Each stem fruits once and then dies, leaving suckers to take its place; growing it therefore means selecting one sucker per clump and removing the rest.
