The spiral of the Drakensberg
Endemic to the basalt slopes of Lesotho, it arranges its leaves in five ranks that wind clockwise or anticlockwise into a spiral of mathematical regularity.
It overwinters under snow, reproduces almost exclusively from seed, and wild collection is banned: every legally sold plant comes from cultivation.
